Easter, or how to treat your taste buds!
Easter is both a religious celebration and a festival of spring and renewal. But Easter is also synonymous with bunnies and chocolate eggs…
But why do we eat bunnies and chocolate eggs at Easter?
Easter is full of different stories and customs. Let’s start with eggs. In ancient times, certain civilizations offered eggs at springtime. However, from the 9th century onwards, the Catholic Church forbade the consumption of eggs during Lent. However, hens continued to lay eggs, and to preserve them, people began to cook and dye them. In the 19th century, a new product aroused great enthusiasm: cocoa. The birth of chocolate Easter eggs was to become an enduring tradition.
What about rabbits? As much as the egg is a symbol of life and rebirth, the rabbit is the sign of a prolific being, especially thanks to the number of offspring a female rabbit can give birth to. It took no less than that for these two emblems to become an integral part of Easter celebrations.
